Whitelion Mentoring Information SessionWhat is mentoring?
Mentors connect, encourage and inspire young people to reach their full potential.
Being a mentor is about offering a supportive and non-judgmental relationship to a young person
and becoming a positive and motivating influence in their life.
Who can be a mentor?
Anyone who is over the age of 18 and successfully completes the training and screening process can be a mentor.
You do not have to have any particular qualification or come from any given background.
We need all sorts of mentors to reflect the diversity of young people we work with.
- You can connect with young people
- You are genuine
- You’ve got your own life together
- You can make a real long-term commitment (at least one year)
- You are willing to working through the challenging times as well as the fun times
- You are seeking an incredibly rewarding experience
Who are the young people?
Whitelion’s mentoring program works with at risk young people aged 10-24
These young people are often disconnected from the community and lack positive role models.
Why do young people want mentors?
Some young people have said they want mentors:
- to find a friend and something to get involved in
- to have someone who believes in them
- to have continuity in a relationship
- to have someone who cares about them
What is required of a mentor?
Whitelion asks its mentors to commit to a relationship of at least 12 months.
During this time mentors are expected to spend 3 hours per fortnight with their young person, Whitelion provides quarterly peer support and
training to ensure mentors continue to improve their mentoring skills and knowledge.
